Essential Oils: Just Basics

What are Essential Oils?
Over the last few years, I have slowly integrated essential oils into my life. I am still learning more about them, and feel there is always more to learn. I personally choose to use Young Living oils because of their Seed to Seal promise and their quality. What that means is they follow strict sourcing guidelines in where the oils are grown, harvested, and bottled. You can learn more about it here. That is not to discount any other brand, it’s a matter of personal choice. I encourage everyone to do their own research for what they believe in. To me, this was a huge selling point as was the fact they are therapeutic grade.
I would never purchase drug store essential oils as I could not determine the efficacy to them. Nor could I determine if any chemicals were included in the process of creating the oil. This is a big deterrent and I strongly advise you to do your own research for what fits in your family.
Through the use of essential oils, I have changed other aspects of my life. More on that to come through, today we are just going to talk about the goodness of oils! Oils can be used aromatically, applied topically, or consumed internally. Always check before using an oil at the recommendations provided. Some are not suggested for consumption; please make sure the product you choose is marked for consumption prior to use. Not all oils are created equally. I personally love to diffuse oils, and also apply topically depending on what I am using them for. Essential oils have been around for thousands of years and used for a variety of things such as supporting your body systems, mental or emotional support, using in household products, improving your beauty routine, and your overall wellness.
What exactly is an essential oil? They are volatile substances derived from plants and extracted mostly through steam distillation. They are highly concentrated and as such, more potent and versatile than their dried counterparts.
To use oils aromatically, you can use them in the following ways:
- Open the bottle and smell directly from it
- Placing a drop in your hands and smelling from your palm
- Diffusing with a specialized diffuser, make sure it does not heat up your oils! This will affect and change how your oils affect your cells.
- Using aromatherapy jewelry; I personally love my diffuser necklace to have benefits throughout the day.
When applying oils topically, you will be applying them directly onto your skin. It is important to remember:
- Use a carrier oil
- Dilution will differ depending on what you are using the oil for, your body size, and how often you typically utilize oils.
- When in doubt, or when you are first starting out, the feet are a great place to apply your oils.
Consuming oils internally is another way to reap the benefits of the oil to support your body systems. Again, make sure the product you are using indicates it is safe for consumption. Young Living has developed a line of oils that are specifically designed for consumption, called the Vitality Oils. They are divided into herb, spice, citrus, and supplement categories.
