Even though fall has technically arrived, Texas hasn’t quite gotten the memo. The mornings are finally cool enough to crack open a window, but by the afternoon, we’re right back in the 90s. Still, I’ve been finding small ways to invite the season in — little rhythms that make home feel peaceful even when the weather hasn’t caught up yet.

Slow Mornings

Before the day gets moving, I start my mornings with coffee, my Bible, and my current study, The Bible Recap. That quiet time — even just fifteen minutes before the kids are up — centers my heart and helps me enter the day with purpose. My kids join me in the living room while I finish up and play, or they sit with me while I finish.

Sometimes I’ll sit outside for a few minutes to enjoy the cool air while it lasts. Those early moments remind me that homemaking starts with the posture of our hearts before it ever touches the to-do list.

Our Homemaking Rhythm Right Now

This season, I’m leaning into rhythm over routine — simple anchors that give structure without pressure. Monday is usually our tidy-up and reset day, Wednesday has become my baking day, and Fridays are our slow, catch-our-breath days before the weekend, where we reset the house. We have also been doing smaller loads of laundry on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

And with baseball season in full swing, having a meal plan has been a lifesaver. I’ve been using one created by another homeschool mom who teaches how to lower your grocery bill and reduce the burnout of “What’s for dinner?”. It’s made our evenings so much easier — everything’s prepped, dinner’s ready, and we can actually sit down together before heading out the door. Bonus, you double the recipes and freeze one for another night! Cook once, eat twice mentality. You can check it out here: Clean + Simple Eats by Taylor Sharp

It’s not a perfect system, but it helps our home feel peaceful and predictable.

Our Favorite Fall Bake

Right now, our oven smells like pumpkin spice more often than not. These Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins have become a weekly staple – easy enough for busy homeschool mornings and perfect for afternoon snacks after lessons or sports practice.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins Recipe

  • 1 ¾ cups flour

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ½ tsp nutmeg

  • 1 cup pumpkin purée

  • ½ cup neutral oil (or melted butter)

  • 2 eggs

  • ¾ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • ¾ cup chocolate chips
Bake at 350°F for 20–22 minutes.

I usually double the batch and freeze half — they reheat beautifully for quick breakfasts on homeschool co-op or sports mornings.

Simple Touches That Feel Like Fall

Even if it doesn’t quite look like fall outside, I still bring a little of the season indoors:
🍂 Switching out our kitchen towels for warm, earthy tones
🍂 Gathering leaves and acorns from our nature walks
🍂 Playing soft acoustic music while I prep dinner

It’s amazing how small changes can make the whole house feel refreshed.

Closing Thoughts

Homemaking doesn’t have to be complicated — it’s about creating moments of peace and connection in the middle of real life. Whether it’s Bible study before sunrise, a fresh batch of muffins cooling on the counter, or a quick afternoon tidy before dinner — those are the things that make home feel like home.
