Environmental Toxins: How do they affect fertility?

Environmental toxins are not something many people talk about when they think about their health. When I had my first miscarriage and experienced several months of not having another pregnancy test, I started diving deep to try and figure out what was causing it. I began working out with yoga and eating clean. Diet became a huge thing I studied, specifically organic real food. To me, real food was a huge importance because it helped to eliminate chemicals that could be hiding in them. After that, I started learning about essential oils and how they could work with my body to be healthier.

With the introduction to essential oils, I began learning about making my own cleaning supplies too. My husband thought I was crazy for all that I was doing and researching. In my mind though, I had to do everything in my power to create the best environment for us to have a child. I was not super strict with anything I did. Life is all about balance and nobody can be 100% perfect. Looking back now, I wish I had been more strict on certain things. I still use essential oils, but not as religiously as when I started out. I was not overly strict with our diets, but I tried the best I knew how. Exercising was a way to not think about it all. I took a step back from yoga and focused on other forms of exercise. While I love it, I found myself focusing so much on wanting to do everything perfectly for having a baby and not on myself in a way I should have been. I was not able to fully let go in class and be in the moment.

What are toxins in?

It’s safe to say, toxins are in just about anything we come in contact with today. From the food we eat to the cleaners we use, to the clothes we wear, to the water we drink, and the medicines we take.

Food

The chemicals used to spray produce for bugs contains toxins that seep into our food. Washing our produce when we get home is important to rid of these, but we can’t eliminate them. The best thing to do is eat organic as much as possible as harsh chemicals are never used on the plants. Making things from scratch at home is also important. Many of the foods in the grocery stores that are mass produced contain chemicals and preservatives to keep food fresh longer.

Cleaners

The products we use to clean our homes often contain harsh chemicals to kill off germs and bacteria in our homes. While cleaning is a necessary thing in life, we don’t need to use these products to achieve a clean environment. We can make our own products or find more natural alternatives! I love making my own and using essential oils, but I also buy natural ones for certain things in the home or depending on time. Even our laundry detergent is affected! Chemicals get into our clothes that we wash and on to our skin when we wear them.

Water

Water filtration systems are important to help us rid the water we use for cooking, drinking, cleaning and bathing in to reduce the number of chemicals we come in contact with. Consider a whole house filtration system, or at the very least, filters on each faucet.

Medicine

Medications are important, don’t think I am telling you to stop taking them! Be mindful of the ones you use, opt for healthier options when available or safe to do so. Consider integrating essential oils into your life to support your body systems. Again, chemicals and preservatives are used to create medications and prolong their shelf life. What do those things do to our bodies?

Personal Care

Our makeup, perfumes, body wash, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, hair care products, and anything else you potentially use on a daily basis to clean and look your best all contain chemicals. We are putting COUNTLESS products onto our skin that in turn seep through into our bloodstream. And we wonder why we lack energy or just feel terrible. Creating a natural beauty routine helps to reduce or eliminate all these excess chemicals coming into our bodies.

Plastics

Those disposable baggies you put your food in every day, the wrap you use over a bowl, reusable plastic containers, and water bottles all come in contact with our foods we consume. Those chemicals leach into what we put in our bodies. Heating plastic up in the microwave with food in them also caused harmful chemicals to enter our food.

What do these toxins do?

The chemicals and toxins that can wreak havoc on our overall health. It is especially important while trying to conceive. They cause an imbalance in our hormones which puts our bodies in distress. Survival will always trump sex. If our hormones are not aligned, the ability to conceive a child will be affected and cause a lot of our infertility struggles. This affects both men and women, so if you are struggling with infertility please don’t assume it is just on you. Both you and your spouse need to be watching what your use and eat in order to create healthy bodily systems and balanced hormones.
