An Initial Look at Dash Into Learning: Kindergarten Reading Review

Disclosure: I received the Dash Into Learning Level 1 Reading Program in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts below are my own.
I recently began using Dash Into Learning Level 1 Reading with my daughter, who has just turned five. She hasn’t officially started kindergarten yet, as we plan to fully begin our homeschool studies together this fall. My son followed a different kindergarten path, so this is my first time being directly responsible for teaching a child to read from the very beginning.
Since my daughter has been eager to learn how to read, we decided on a gentle “soft launch” to help her become comfortable with early reading lessons. This will also give us a sense of what a full kindergarten experience together will look like. While we haven’t yet completed much, I wanted to share our initial impressions and early experience with the program.
First Impressions
From the moment we opened the materials, it was clear that Dash Into Learning was designed with young learners in mind. The lessons are visually engaging without being overwhelming, and the overall layout feels simple, approachable, and parent-friendly—which is especially important for busy homeschool families.
Everything we needed to get started was clearly laid out, and I appreciated that the program didn’t require excessive prep time. That made it easy to ease back into learning after the holiday break without adding stress for either of us.
It gave me the confidence to sit down with her since this is a new concept for me as well!
Ease of Use
One of the standout features so far has been how open-and-go the lessons feel. The instructions are clear, and I didn’t feel like I needed to over-explain or supplement heavily right away. My daughter was able to jump in confidently, and the structure felt supportive rather than rigid.
Even with an inconsistent schedule over the holidays, the program was easy to pause and pick back up—something I value highly in early elementary curriculum. Amelia also provides a sample schedule to help families get started with confidence. While my daughter often wanted to keep moving ahead, the built-in review and the way the first book is thoughtfully broken down have been especially helpful for supporting a younger, emerging reader.
Student Engagement
My daughter has responded very positively so far. She enjoys the activities and doesn’t view them as “too much” or frustrating, which is a big win at this age. The lessons feel developmentally appropriate and gently build skills without rushing. She loves the beauty and the characters a lot. Which helps keep her engaged!
Because we haven’t completed the first few books, I’m intentionally holding off on making claims about long-term progress. The engagement and willingness to participate have been strong from the start. The fact that she brings me her books each day, eager to dive in, has been such a blessing and has kept her wonderfully motivated.
What I’m Looking Forward To
As we continue using the program more consistently, I’m especially interested in:
- How skills are built over time
- Retention and confidence with reading concepts
- How well the program supports independence as lessons progress
I plan to share a follow-up review after completing the program to reflect more fully on outcomes and growth.
Final Thoughts (So Far)
Based on our initial experience, Dash Into Learning Level 1 has made a very positive first impression. It feels thoughtfully designed, easy to implement, and well-suited for kindergarten learners—especially for families who want a structured reading program without being overwhelmed.
As a homeschool parent of two very different learners, I’ve seen firsthand how important curriculum fit can be. While this style may not have been the best match for my son at the kindergarten stage, it has been a wonderful fit for my daughter, who thrives with the gentle pacing and built-in review.
I’m looking forward to continuing and sharing more once we’ve had more time to fully dig in.
